Wonders of Italy

Genoa (Genova) could be viewed without any doubt, as the one of the European capitals, even if it is only the Liguria's one Opulent. Popular and aristocratic at the same time, it is like a massive tree on the shores of the Mediterranean, perennial and thousand-year-old, with deep and sinuous roots like its alleys.

An emblematic history of Europe

The first evidence of initiation of civilization in the region dates back to the Neolithic period, i.e. at least 5000 years BC. . AD During Antiquity, the presence of Greeks and Etruscans is confirmed during the 6th century BC. J. - C. and undoubtedly well before, because the origin of the port would indeed be much older. Powerful by the architectural entanglement of its streets, trapped between the mountain, its devastating torrents and the sea as one of the only two exits (the other being the Via Aurelia), Genoa could only be anchored for thousands of years, like a heavy, immense and durable boat made of this wood that only history strengthens.

Intensities

Let's start our journey instead, not like most guides would, but more like the child eager for immediate discoveries, human contact ... if possible , without digital filters. Because Genoa is the deceptively picturesque city par excellence. Everything bribes us, interrupts us, dissuades us from thinking of anything other than what we see, what we feel and smell. Intense ! From this parade of baroque palaces interspersed with a maze of medieval alleys, from this reminiscence of fascist architecture through the worst taste of post-war Italy, it is the upper Genoa that crushes that bottom. The Republic of Genoa as jealous as that of Venice, a giant commercial nave which made the entire Mediterranean region tremble, its rivals and its vassal cities. This city is a slap in the face, the rejection of the propet and the postcard, but we come out more alive, more nourished than ever. Be careful, Genoa is not easily tamed. As with all those seeds of empire, she has not finished supporting her legend.

Let us obviously place ourselves in the heart, the district known as the historic center. Spread over more than a hundred hectares, you are here in one of the epicenters of the Middle Ages in Europe. It is called a labyrinth, so much the alleys, caruggi , compete with the piazzette (small places), space and time. You will walk through these small arteries keeping in mind that what you see as buildings constitute, in a way, piles of architectural strata, just like geological strata. These medieval buildings have been shaped and reshaped by the great eras, ranging from the Renaissance to the Baroque. However, the soul of the Middle Ages remains very present. You will understand this when you discover the votive chapels at the corners of the streets, which the craftsmen's guilds ordered to light up their neighborhood at night. Modernity has skilfully slipped into this garb of History, taking care not to alter this extraordinary heritage by its richness and density, Genoa having always been one of the most populous cities in Europe.
